In 1983, the founders of English With A Smile (EWAS), Gadi Bossin, Ph.D., and Joel Tal, M.Sc., opened a private English-language school in northern Israel. The school attracted 300 pupils (mostly in grades 1 to 4) in its first year and used textbooks imported from the United States.
During their first year of operation, Bossin and Tal realized that the imported textbooks failed to fully meet the needs of their pupils (or teachers) and the program had to be supplemented with additional materials.
Together, they began to develop and write original activity worksheets, props and lesson plans. These supplemental materials evolved over the years into the colorful, dynamic and creative English With A Smile programs.
Over the years, the small private English-language school expanded into a countrywide network. Thousands of pupils and hundreds of teachers have benefited from the EWAS program and method.
In 1995, English With A Smile was approved by the Israel Ministry of Education for use in the public school system. This approval made English With A Smile available to thousands more Israeli schoolchildren.
In 2001, Bossin and Tal took EWAS beyond Israel by offering a complete pedagogical and operational business package to franchisees in other countries to make the EWAS program available in francises in other countries.
